Die größte Neuerung von GNOME 3.36 ist der überarbeitete Sperrbildschirm. Dieser sieht jetzt nicht nur besser aus, sondern ist nun auch funktionaler und leichter zu bedienen. Mithilfe des neuen „Do Not Disturb“-Buttons lassen sich die Benachrichtigungen auf ein Minimum beschränken. Ist der „Nicht stören“-Modus aktiviert, zeigt GNOME nur noch wichtige Systembenachrichtigungen wie beispielsweise für einen fast leeren Akku an.
GNOME-Erweiterungen werden nun nicht mehr über GNOME Software verwaltet. Hierfür kann jetzt die speziell zu diesem Zweck entwickelte Anwendung GNOME Extensions verwendet werden. Die Virtualisierungssoftware GNOME Boxes kommt nun mit einem Tutorial daher und bietet zudem die Möglichkeit, mit UEFI zu booten. Im Einrichtungsprozess einer neuen virtuellen Maschine ist nun das Einstellen der Anzahl der genutzten CPUs möglich.
